The prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is increasing worldwide. Although our therapeutic arsenal to beget these conditions and their consequences in the form of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is increasing a lot still needs to be learned about the underlying mechanisms.
Our research deals with clinical care and therapy of obesity and T2DM, collectively called "diabesity", as well as probing of underlying genetic mechanisms. We study variation in separate candidate genes such as PPAR-gamma, PGC1-alpha, CAPN10, FOXC2, APM1, ADPN, TCF7L2 and FTO, the transcription of these genes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue biopsies or cells as well as changes in the whole transcriptome by cDNA-microarray. Our patient materials include both grown-ups and children.
