Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and their maintenance/differentiation are regulated by complex mechanisms including epigenetic changes and transcription factor regulatory networks. A snapshot of how these processes are working can be captured using next generation sequencing (NGS). These techniques are presently being implemented at the level of the single cell, allowing us to measure the degree of heterogeneity present within a population of cells. This raises a number of computational challenges such as how to find sub-populations of cells (that may be functionally different) in amongst noisey data, and also how this data is visualised. These areas form the focus of our research.
