Soft tissue sarcomas constitute a group of some 50 histopathologic rare tumor types with different clinical behavior and prognosis. Two thirds are highly malignant and one third of the patients die due to metastatic disease. The patients in the Southern Swedish health care region are diagnosed and treated at the Lund Sarcoma Center. We study genetic and molecular profiles, and link tumor characteristics to treatment and prognosis. The findings are applied for refined diagnostics and prognostics in sarcomas in collaboration with the Dept. of Oncology, Pathology and Clinical Genetics. We have identified risk factors for tumor recurrences and described distinct gene expression profiles in sarcoma subtypes. We are exploring the genetic profiles of mixed secondary sarcomas and identifying treatment related factors associated to tumor recurrence in myxofibrosarcoma. We strive to improve the diagnostic and prognostic tools in order to improve outcome and survival for patients with sarcomas.
