Research

Currently I am the PI of a project titled "The use of health apps among persons with neurological disability" The project is an interdisciplinary explorative qualitative study including persons with neurological disability.

Background
The strong development in mobile technology and an overall increased interest in the individuals own responsibility for his/her health has led to a constantly increasing market of health apps. Health apps target people with specific medical conditions (sometimes called medical apps) or people in general interested in a healthy lifestyle issues. People ageing with a neurological disability, an increasing group in our ageing society, could potentially benefit from using health apps to deal with the consequences of their disability in everyday life and to manage their medical conditions along the process of ageing. This interdisciplinary postdoc project with user involvement is a first step to address the phenomenon of health app use, usability, effects and consequences by focusing on people ageing with a neurological disability.

Social, health, technical, design and legal aspects will be explored with qualitative methodology with participants having prior experience of health app usage.

The aim of the project

The aim is to describe and discuss how people ageing with a neurological disability perceive different influences and consequences of using health apps, by using a multidisciplinary approach.

Importance
The results are important for understanding the relation between people ageing with a neurological disability and health care services concerning safety, responsibility, and privacy in terms of reporting personal information on health using new technology such as health apps. The findings of this project will thus serve as a basis for further projects on the increasing development and availability of health apps concerning technology and design.
