In his thesis project, "Pre-modern Tolerance Dilemmas. Comparing the issue of tolerance regarding French Protestants and Swedish Pietists in the early 18th century." Ljungberg compares how practice of deviant religion was perceived, classified and negotiated in unofficial correspondence in early 18th century France and by royal commissions in 1720s Sweden. Instead of tracing a genealogy of how political, modern tolerance was growing out from an intolerant culture, Ljungberg aims to map out which particular considerations were crucial and less pertinent in investigations concerning deviant religion, and from that point discuss the issue of pre-modern intolerance and tolerance on a more general, European level. The findings are discussed both in the light of conflicts concerning unity in early 18th century political culture and with help from more universal, sociological distinctions.
