Description

My PhD project concerns the structure and function of SMIM1, a newly discovered eryhtroid protein. We know that a desrupted SMIM1 gene gives rise to the rare blood group pheonotype Vel-negative (Vel-) but we do not know the function of SMIM1, or the consequences, if any, for people who lack it. I focus on the biochemical characteristics of SMIM1 and its relationship to the Vel blood group antigen. I also investigate the role of SMIM1 in eryhtropoesis in vitro.
