In speech we rarely pronounce consonants and vowels in isolation, instead they are produced in an overlapping manner. This overlapping, or coarticulation, is not merely an artefact, but instead might be crucial for the listener decoding the message.

The universal linguistic phenomenon of coarticulation is the theme of my dissertation project. The project includes production and perception studies, and covers speech modeling, speech motor control, articulatory theories, phonology and prosody.

By measuring articulator’s movements during speech, using the Carstens AG501 at the Lund University Humanities Lab (, I am currently looking at how the coarticulation at word onset differs between the Swedish word accents, which are known for their tonal timing differences.
