Abstract

It is generally accepted that there were well-established relationships between castles and commerce in medieval Sweden. However, to date, the complexities of those relationships have arguably not been fully explored. Through focusing on archaeological evidence from three very different examples, Stockholm, Borgholm and Piksborg, this paper seeks to illustrate the variety of often intimate and complex relationships that existed between castles, both urban and rural, and commercial activity in medieval Sweden. It describes instances of shops within castles, the influence of castles on pre-existing trading centres and castles that took on commercial roles, reinforcing the importance of commerce for castle builders and their castle lords.
