PhD project title: No Time to talk! Teachers' Perception of Organizational Communication and Work Related Health

My research is focused on organizational communication in education. I am especially interested in the collegial communication between teachers which presumably influences their sense of inclusion and belonging at work. Examples of relevant topics are negative acts and pro-social behaviors. In addition, I am interested in communication as it facilitates or hinders learning and growth.

Current research questions have to do with how social and organizational factors in the educations system influence teachers work satisfaction and professional development. My aim is to elucidate in what way work related relational mechanisms influence employee job satisfaction, work engagement, and well-being among teachers in the Swedish education system.

In an organization such as a school, experiencing rapid change, new regulation and demands, as well as inadequate employment conditions, human interactions are put to a test. At best, the local context provides a stable and safe environment for teachers and students, functioning as some sort of buffer. Central to professional functioning and well-being are relationships between employees and how they are manifested as behavior. The communication climate in a school is essential for the self-improvement a teacher continually needs to engage in, in order to be able to teach.

These forms of reiterative loops of communication can, at best, spiral into a cascade of learning. It can be hypothesized that this type of day-to-day learning is what brakes or makes a successful teacher.

Since becoming involved in teaching at the university level, I have developed an interest in current issues in higher education, the professionalization of the doctoral education as well as issues on supervision and teaching. It is my heartfelt belief that academic advising is an activity engaging me as a whole person. One of my first academic advisors continually claims that - long after the details of "the stuff' are gone, lessons that actually matter is the development of intellectual character, moral citizenship, interpersonal respect, mentorship, and leadership qualities. Being part of an environment shaped by such a philosophy is what has made the difference for me and what I hope to bring to my academic advising as well as teaching.
