Cultural Implications of Machine Vision

Projekt: Avhandling

Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning

This project examines the applications of advanced visual technologies in contemporary cultural contexts. Machine vision, born out of industrial practices, has been increasingly applied onto human activity, operating as a cultural prosthesis of meaning production in a post industrial society. Further analysis of these technologies through a visual studies perspective contributes to the discourse.

Machine vision, born out of industrial practices, has been utilized within the factory for the automatic inspection of machine parts and guidance for industrial robots. The utilization of this mechanized human capability has expanded out of the factory and into society. This project examines the applications of advanced visual technologies in contemporary cultural contexts. Applied to political and social realms, the scope of machine vision has expanded to global proportions through the use of drones, as well as contracted to the microscopic details of the human body as found in biometric scans. This project places the processes of advanced technologies of automated and machine vision as a central site of contemporary meaning production in a post industrial age. An analysis of their growing application within society poses questions on the role of the apparatus and its functional logic exposing broader patterns of societal structure in the information age. It poses the question: How does the processes of the production of an automated image function as a visual prosthetic, extending human observation techniques and thereby affecting / transforming outcomes and action within a societal context?
