    Description

    ABSTRACT:
Emil František Burian (1904-1959) was one of the most versatile figures of Czech culture. He is
primarily known in the domestic context as a theatre man, while abroad he is more renowned as
a composer. There has not been as yet a scholarly work which has evaluated his contribution to
the music of the twentieth century. Documentation of Burian’s musical compositions is needed
to the greatest extent. Despite the numerous analyses of Burian, the theatre man, there is a
lack of a complete and exact listing of his theatre stagings, to say nothing of his literary and still
unanalysed fine art works, which are an essential part of Burian’s artistic legacy. The aim of the
project is to therefore establish a list of the works of E. F. Burian in all areas of his artistic
endeavours on the basis of his final papers, which are housed in different locales within the
Czech Republic. The list will be designated for publication. The output in English should
correspond to the international importance of this personage. The investigator will also commit
to publishing one study in a respected journal.
