Brigitte Baptiste, Vice-chancellor of the School of Business Administration, EAN Universidad in Bogotá is presenting her lecture about “Transitions to sustainability in the country of biodiversity”.
Colombia, like all other countries in the world, is struggling to reach the best path to replace unsustainable practices and get into a “nature´s positive” trend, protecting and recovering its biodiversity and ecosystem services under the principles of the SDGs, the contradictions and trade-offs that emerge between scales and human economic activities. In her lecture, Brigitte Baptiste will address the main policy discussions about food production, energy, oil and coal exports, wetland and forest management, illegal coca planting and cocaine trade in the context of the latest IPBES Values Assessment release.
Dr Brigitte Baptiste is a biologist from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, with a Master's degree in Conservation and Tropical Development from the University of Florida. In addition, she is a PhD Honoris Causa in Environmental Management from Unipaz. During the last 10 years, she served as General Director of the Alexander Von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute in Colombia. She is now a member of the Superior Council of the EAN University.
In addition, she is the Colombian representative in the Intergovernmental Panel on Biological Diversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the scientific body created in 2012 by the United Nations for biodiversity issues -based in Bonn- and modelled after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Climate (IPCC). Dr Baptiste has had a long career in academia. She was an ecology professor at Javeriana University for more than twenty years, working on issues such as environmental management policies and the conservation of rural landscapes. She has been linked to the Gea Ecological Group and the Forest History Society. In addition, she has been a Fulbright and Russell Train Program grantee of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
