Description

Ethiopia has a very rich cultural heritage including unique medieval churches regarded as crucial world heritage sites. This heritage is not only poorly studied but also in danger of decay. On the basis of current research and conservation projects on one of the most famous churches, Yimrhane Kristos the conference aims at deepening our understanding on how religious tradition and experience in Ethiopia are interrelated with the cultural identity and heritage of the country, and promoting interdisciplinary cooperation. Due to a lack of written sources the preserved buildings as well as other material remains of the 11th-12th century are crucial in order to understand the role of Ethiopia in the period of the crusades and in the medieval relations between Christianity and Islam
