Description

To talk about the Pumping Yemen Dry: Climate, the Water Crisis and the Future of Yemen.
Starting in the 1980s there were predictions that Yemen would soon be running out of water due to drastic declines in the water table and limited rainfall for recharge of the aquifers. With a population increase from about 7 million in 1976 to an estimated 29 million in 2018 and several decades of uncontrolled well drilling for irrigation, the “water crisis” will continue long after the current political conflict abates. Given the poverty and current destruction of Yemen’s infrastructure, providing sufficient water for the future will be a difficult task. This talk will look at the history of Yemen’s water crisis, the role of climatic change and the environmental implications for Yemen’s future development.
