Grammar in the English Classroom at Secondary School: A Research-Based Approach

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This talk is about the role of explicit, teacher-led focus on form within communicative language teaching in compulsory language education. In the focus-on-form approach, grammar tasks are contextualized in meaning-focused tasks intended to enhance pupils’ communicative competence. International research on the effect of teacher-led grammar tasks on pupils’ use and learning of grammar will be presented and discussed. The talk closes with a presentation of a study of how 15-16-year-old pupils in Sweden understand the use of English 3rd-person singular –s. The audience are invited to reflect upon and discuss how different kinds of grammar tasks may be integrated and used in their own teaching contexts.
