In this presentation, we want to give an overview of various measurement solutions for measuring traffic-related emissions and also look beyond the horizon to emissions from other transport sectors, such as shipping or aviation.
In urban areas, roads and other means of transportation, including aviation and shipping, are usually the main sources of particulate matter (Morawska et al. 2019). The great importance of particulate emissions from these traffic-related combustion and abrasion processes is currently leading to an increased need to research and quantify these emissions. The aim of these measurements is an improved understanding of the contribution of the various sources, the emission levels and the resulting effects, which are important points of support in air quality modelling and for the assessment of limit values. The focus here is increasingly on ultrafine particles in the size range below 100 nm, which are not covered by the PM2.5 and especially PM10 standards. For the first time, the WHO has issued a "good practice statement" regarding the number concentration of ultrafine particles in outdoor air in its air quality guidelines (WHO, 2022).
Due to the high diversity of emission processes and measurement targets, the methods used for characterization are quite heterogeneous. In this presentation I will present examples of existing measurement solutions and setups in order to provide an overview of the various methods and measurement objectives.
