Myelination and formation of axonal connections are a major factor in brain development. Although containing a considerable amount of protons, the biophysical properties of cell-membranes and myelin allow only for indirect detection by MRI. This technical talk will give an introduction to the contrast mechanisms of behind structural MRI, myelin-water imaging (MWI) and more specific MRI techniques like Magnetization Transfer (MT) and inhomogeneous MT. Special attention will be given to the challenges at high field strength.
