Description

During the last decades, the discipline of Musicology (in Sweden: Musikvetenskap) has undergone dramatic change. The discipline has been broadened both with regard to methodologies and the empirical material studied. Important in this process has been a growing interdisciplinary awareness and collaboration and collaboration. These developments have largely been very beneficial for the field, but also hold potential risks. As the discipline grasps for wider and more diversified approaches,
this also raises questions of the borders, definitions and identity of the discipline. These questions appear even more important in light of the fast development of the neighbouring disciplines of music research, e.g. Music Education, Artistic Research and Performance studies, Music Psychology, etc. In this conference we meet to discuss musicological objectives, methods, theoretical perspectives,
and possible disciplinary borders. The conference is a collaboration between the six universities that teach and research within the discipline: Göteborg, Linnéuniversitetet, Lund, Stockholm, Uppsala, and Örebro. The papers can take a starting point in your own ongoing research, but should primarily focus on the principal aspects drafted above: how do you position your research within the wider field of the discipline? How does your work relate to other disciplines, and what benefits or challenges do you identify in interdisciplinary approaches?

The papers can e.g. address:
• Relations between sub-disciplines such as Ethnomusicology, Historical Musicology, Popular
Music Research, Music Analysis, Audiovisual Studies, etc.
• Qualitative vs. quantitative methods
• Performance Studies and Musicology
• Culture studies and Musicology
• Sound studies and Musicology
