Nanowire Week 2022 - Oral Presentation on "Optical biosensing enhanced by aerotaxy nanowires suitable for scalable, low-cost production"

Description

Oral Presentation on our results:
"Fluorescence-based biosensors are appealing tools for precise diagnosis applications, offering the high- sensitive detection of relevant biomolecules present at low concentrations, which can be potentially improved when combined with semiconductor nanowires, able to enhance the signal coming from surface-bound fluorophores. This so-called lightguiding effect requires of highly-controlled methods to produce nanowires with adequate dimensions for optimal fluorescence enhancement, as the standard metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Given the high costs and low-throughput of this batch-based method, it is not compatible for mass production. The proposed alternative is aerotaxy, a continuous and scalable production technology of high-quality nanowires for diagnostic applications in a cost-efficient way. Thus, we evaluated Ga(As)P aerotaxy and GaP epitaxy-grown standing nanowire platforms, showing a comparable signal improvement by one and two orders of magnitude, respectively, in contrast to planar glass slides of similar surface chemistry, as a proof of the potential of aerotaxy nanowires for unexpensive optical biosensing applications, with a prospect of a 10-fold improvement on the limit of detection (LOD) than conventional flat surfaces.
