Jacob Korczynski, inaugural recipient of the General Idea Fellowship, concluded his on-site research by inviting the public into the Library and Archives to share many of the works by artists from the Art Metropole Collection that he has discovered, spent time with, and learned from during the last year.
Korczynski’s research focuses on the Art Metropole Collection of artists’ books, editions, and multiples, in relation to Art Metropole’s early activities as a distributor of artists’ film and video. In particular, he focused on a group of artists who are represented in the Art Metropole Collection, but whose film and video work was never distributed by Art Metropole.
A connected but parallel history emerges in this presentation, centred upon the work of three women artists — Canadian and international — who, like General Idea, created artist-run spaces while also maintaining their own art practices.
