POSTER: The role of land-surface interactions for the climate biases in the EC-Earth earth system model

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

Description

The EC-Earth earth system model is characterized by biases in various aspects of the simulated climate. Biases in precipitation result in biases in soil moisture, while biases in temperature and precipitation contribute to biases in vegetation. In this study, the extent to which the biases in soil moisture and vegetation contribute to the biases in near-surface climate conditions in EC-Earth through interactions with the atmosphere is investigated.
The study is based on an offline simulation with the land-surface component of EC-Earth, combining the H-TESSEL land surface model and the LPJ-GUESS dynamical vegetation model forced by the meteorological conditions from ERA5, and four simulations with the atmospheric version of EC-Earth with different treatments of the land-surface conditions, using the estimates of soil moisture and vegetation from the offline simulation.
Based on these simulations the contributions of the biases in soil moisture and vegetation to the climate biases of EC-Earth are assessed, i.e. for the land-surface conditions combined, and for soil moisture and vegetation separately. Also, the effects of interactively coupling the land-surface component in EC-
Earth are assessed. The focus of the presentation is on near-surface climate conditions, where the analysis of the energy balance at the land surface is paramount.
