As part of the European robotics week the robotics lab in the M-house at Lund University, arranges presentations and guided tours. During the most of the week we meet about 400 primary and secondary school students. However, this time slot we open up for adult visitors from industry, public sector or other parts of Lund University.

In close interaction with industry locally and globally research in the LTH productive robotics lab is performed in a multitude of areas and disciplines. During this lab tour we introduce the robot lab, how it is organised and equipped with a focus on the intersection between robotics and automation. Thereafter we show examples of various kinds of robots, research challenges and solutions.

Robots have been used in industrial automation already for several decades,  where typical use include so-called pick-and-place operations (material handling), spray painting and e.g., spot welding on car chassis in the manufacturing industry, 
all in very well defined environments, where one has been able repeat  the same kind  of operations over and over again for long production series without the need to  re-program the robots to often. The demands on small-lot production and short manufacturing series  raise new challenges to cope with uncertainties and the concept of "collaborative robots",  where humans and robots can share workspace, open up new possibilities to make industrial  robots much more productive. Fast workspace sensing, accurate calibration, and contact force control are  different examples of important enabling factors which are key elements in  significantly improving the usability of robots in future new applications and domains.
