Unit profile

Research

Humans are daily exposed to environmental toxicants which can harm our health. The aim of our research is to monitor human exposure to toxicants from the general environment, as well as at occupational settings, and to evaluate their impact on the human body. For this purpose we develop sensitive analytical methods using mass spectrometry for measurements of exposure biomarkers in human samples (e.g. blood and urine) which reflect external exposure levels, but also how the body handles toxicants with respect to uptake, metabolism and excretion rate. Several of our projects involve investigating the relationship between exposures and health effects by analyzing biomarkers representing early biological responses such as oxidative stress and inflammation. We also measure toxicants in some environmental samples such as air and dust. Our laboratory at Medicon Village in Lund is equipped with the latest mass spectrometry technology and we have a leading role internationally in exposure analyses.
