Unit profile

Description

Thomas Kander is Research Group Leader.

Research

The group is conducting research in many different areas: 1) Coagulation. Pro- and anti-coagulative processes during critical illness are investigated using different coagulation instruments. Facilities include a laboratory close to the intensive care unit. 2) Central venous catheter (CVC) is essential in the treatment of many medical disorders. Unfortunately, the insertion and the use of CVCs are associated with complications, which in most cases are avoidable. This sub-research-group focuses on mapping the occurrence of CVC-related complications, identify risk factors and create conditions for optimizing the insertion and management of CVCs. 3) Intensive care epidemiology. Registry studies regarding relations between variables at admission and outcome in critical care, are studied. This knowledge is important for early identification of patients at risk and early start of targeted treatment.
