Unit profile

Research

Fashion studies engages in research on fashion, clothes and textiles from contemporary and historical perspectives. As an umbrella term fashion encompass everything from fashion as cultural phenomenon, social practice, aesthetic expression to commercial commodity. This approach gives the subject its multidisciplinary character. At Lund University, particular attention is given the materiality of fashion, and fashion and sustainability. Fashion has long been the object of interest, most notably within art history, sociology, ethnology and philosophy. In 2006, fashion studies as an independent academic discipline was established, and in 2012 the BA programme in fashion studies at Lund University was launched. The fact that fashion now has an academic room of its own is not only symbolically significant, but aids the development of academic knowledge. Scholars with an interest in fashion have now a shared platform, where the object of study, rather than disciplinary boundaries, defines the research field.
