Unit profile

Research

Goiter is a multifaceted common disease. Metabolism may be normal, elevated or low. Surgical treatment offers several clinical problems: diagnosis and therapy of thyroid cancer, and hormonal insufficiency and postoperative complications. We aim to develop and simplify surgical treatment and to analyse postoperative risk factors and to identify opportunities for prevention and treatment. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been known for long but several issues are unresolved, e.g. indication for surgery in elderly patients with mild calcium elevation. The project aims to clarify the value of surgical treatment of PHPT on mortality and morbidity. Adrenal tumours detected "incidentally", so called adrenal incidentalomas, occur in approximately 1-5% of the population. The most common functional disorder is increased release of cortisol without clinical signs. The research project aims at analysing indication for surgery, and the risk of morbidity and mortality in incidentalomas.
