Unit profile

Research

The area of Experimental Infection Medicine encompasses beneficial and detrimental aspects of microbes: 1. Benevolent bacteria We are all colonized by a plethora of bacteria, but remain healthy. Can specific beneficial bacteria contribute to health? We are investigating the impact of bacteria (probiotics) and bacterial proteins in maintaining health. 2. Killing of bacteria The Lood lab uses novel experimental means to combat infections which include predatory bacteria, bacteriophages and phage enzymes. 3. Antibiotic resistance We are investigating the biology behind, and means to limit the spread of mobile genetic elements (e.g. phage), which can generate antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. The lab focuses on translational research, collaborating with medical doctors, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, genetics, biotechnologists, biomedicine professionals, evolutionary biologists, and interact with several industrial partners; working with both basic and applied research.
