Research
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disabilities and current treatment options are limited. The research group uses experimental and clinical approaches to study TBI, from the most severe brain injuries to the milder sport-related concussions. The brain´s own capacity for repair is poor and one research aim is to enhance brain recovery and repair following injury. TBI is also a risk factor for neurodegeneration and dementias and findings typically observed in brains of Alzheimer´s disease patients such as plaques of beta-amyloid (Aß) are also observed in TBI. The link between TBI, formation of A?, and dementia is being explored by our group. In addition, brain network dysfunction caused by injury to axons (the long extension of the neuron) is the most important cause of the persisting behavioral problems in TBI. Injury to axons and how it relates to neuroinflammation is another key research areas of the group where novel treatment options are being evaluated.
