Research

Apolipoprotein A-I in HDL Apolipoprotein A-I is the major protein of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in the transportation of cholesterol and other lipids in vivo. Rare variants of apoA-I aggregate as amyloids, leading to organ dysfunction. The structure-function relationship of atheroprotective and amyloidogenic apoA-I variants are investigated. HDL also correlates to improved glucose metabolism in the diabetic state. Learning more about HDL, will lead in the search for new innovative peptide drugs to prevent and treat diabetes and atherosclerosis. Zinc transporter ZnT8 in diabetes The ZnT8 transporter is localized to insulin granules in pancreatic beta cells were microcrystals of insulin-zinc are stored. ZnT8 polymorphism relates to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and constitutes a potential target for prevention and treatment. Analyses of variant-specific protein structure and function, and cellular organization and functionality, are carried out to understand the role of ZnT8 in diabetes.
