Description

Ophthalmology at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund, conducts both clinical and basic research on the eye and visual system. The aim is to better understand and treat major diseases that threat our vision, such as inherited retinal diseases, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, cataract and periorbital tumors and giant cell arteritis. Activities include: novel non-invasive imaging techniques for tumors, arteritis and blood perfusion in order to optimise surgical procedures, maintaining a patient registry, advanced clinical diagnostics, gene discovery and development of gene therapy for inherited retinal diseases, experimental studies of retinal biomechanics, analyses of disease models to unveil the molecular mechanisms underlying the diseases, experimental tests of various molecules and factors aimed at preventing cell death in the retina, as well as development of nanomaterials for tissue repair and for retinal implants.
