Osteoporosis predominantly, but not exclusively affects older women and its clinical consequence, fracture, results in pain, lost independence and premature death. In our research we investigate the genetic and non-genetic factors contributing to skeletal strength in young adults, men and elderly women, with an emphasis on defining the genes, age related gene-environment interactions and interactions between the skeleton, muscle, adipose tissue, inflammation and metabolism. Our research strategy takes an integrated approach connecting basic science and clinical research through 1) Genetic studies in population based cohorts of young and elderly women with more than 10y of longitudinal data 2) Experimental studies in human bone tissue and animal models 3) Translational studies applying our research findings clinically at the Osteoporosis Research Unit, Malmö. Ultimately, our aim is to identify very high-risk individuals and ‘personalize’ fracture prevention management.
