Unit profile

Description

The research group Plant Biology focuses on evolutionary processes, distribution of plant populations in space and time and interaction between plants and between plants and the environment. We study evolutionary processes and conservation biology as well as molecular plant biology. We are united through our interest in plants.

Research

We study the plants’ systems for control of growth, development, transport and metabolism, and their responses against environmental stresses, both abiotic and biotic. By analyzing and classifying the plants we try to explain their evolutionary relationship. Our research is basic research as well as working with current problems within nature conservation and environmental control. Our methods are many; from field studies and experiments to molecular investigations and chemical analysis. Some of the questions we try to answer is which historical vegetation factors have determined today’s biodiversity and how biological treatment can make plants’ defense against deceases stronger and increase their growth.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 2 - Zero Hunger
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 15 - Life on Land
