SEpsis and Bacterial Resistance Alliance (SEBRA) is an awarded cross-professional interdisciplinary group of researchers and clinicians who represent the county hospital SUS Lund, and the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering (LTH) at Lund University. SEBRA’s aims are • To improve the basic knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms of sepsis • To identify molecular processes to enable improvement of sepsis diagnostics and treatment • To increase awareness of sepsis • To achieve a better coordination of sepsis research regionally and nationally.
Sepsis is a severe, systemic response to infection, often caused by bacteria. Approx. 30 million cases occur worldwide each year causing up to 8 million deaths. The mortality is as high as 30%. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is crucial, as mortality increases with 8% every hour that appropriate treatment is delayed. Sepsis is fairly unknown to the general public, and complicated by its rapid progression and diverse etiology. Furthermore, sepsis research is underfunded in comparison to other medical conditions.
