Personal profile
Research
The gastrointestinal tract serves as the primary site of nutrient absorption while it also harbours the highest load of commensal bacteria, representing a major portal of pathogen exposure. Not surprisingly, the gut mucosal immune system comprises the largest amount of immune cells in the body and as such, it relies on both dietary factors and signals derived from the commensal bacteria to guide appropriate functions. For the well-being of humans, the interdependence of diet, immune and commensal interactions is of utmost importance. My focus of research and knowledge accumulation is in the interface between nutrition, immunology and microbiology and with the point of intersection in human health. A major part of my research has been linked evaluating the immunological, physiological and microbiological outcomes of food supplements in different animal models and clinical trials.
