Goenaga's research revolves around comparative politics, development and democratic theory. His previous and ongoing work has explored questions of state formation and state capacity, the impact of public debate on democratic attitudes, the tensions between popular sovereignty and liberal rights, and the changing meaning of democracy over time, among other topics.
He is the principal investigator of the projects “The Deliberative Capacity of Democratic Systems” (funded by the Swedish Royal Academy of Letters) and “The Politics of State-Building: Studying Investments in State Capacity through Legislative Debates” (funded by the Swedish Research Council).
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
