Research

I am a researcher at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University in Sweden. I completed my PhD in Philosophy of Religion in 2021 with the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. My primary expertise is in modern European philosophical and religious thought, though I am also more broadly interested in ethics, conceptions of the self, theories and methods in the study of religion, apocalypticism, and fringe movements in popular culture and politics (such as conspiracism).

My fundamental research questions involve the role that religious ideas play in the architecture of the human being as a moral, intellectual, and political agent: How does the human's subjective encounter with the ideas of God and freedom structure moral obligation? What roles do concepts such as freedom, love, justice, eternality, and sin play in shaping the self? How do contradictions between ideals of divine justice and the reality of unjust suffering disturb or motivate moral engagement? Moreover, I am curious to ask how theology, the humanities, and philosophy of religion more specifically provide avenues to connect the ideas present in their (often fraught, often disputed) canons to ethics, politics, and pop culture.

My primary current research efforts are for the RJ-funded research program At the End of the World, which investigates the connections between apocalypse as an ancient literary genre and its manifestations in present-day culture (including political movements and media). As a researcher on the program, I pose the core questions of my research and teaching to the beliefs and praxes of right-wing apocalyptic and conspiracist movements. My emerging research output will focus on how Donald Trump found political success by adapting a political style that coordinated support from conspiracist and apocalyptic strands of the American electorate.

I have academic side interests in interpreting video games as texts, reality television, and science-fiction & horror literature. Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you and I share interests! I love to collaborate and consider other points of view.
