In 2005 Tobias Olofsson and Alejandra Vásquez discovered that a large battery of beneficial bacteria resides within honeybees and are a key in honey production.

The discovery of these bacteria, including 9 species of Lactobacilli and 4 species of Bifidobacteria, within honeybees and their honey started a new research at Lund University and it extends to three different research areas; Medical applications, Functional food and Bee health.

Our research focus on the antimicrobial properties of these beneficial bacteria in order to apply them in functional food and as alternative medical tools to antibiotics. Moreover, we investigate their role in bee health in collaboration with other universities. Our research is solely external funded with grants from Formas, VR and others.
