Senior lecturer, Associate Professor
Alexander Maurits (born 1978) is an Associate Professor of Church History. Maurits teaches within Studies in Christianity at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies. He currently serves as the dean of the Faculty of Theology and as dean for PhD programs at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology. He is also an academic staff representative on the University Board.
During the period 2015-2023, Maurits served as chair of the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies. During the fall semester of 2022, he was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Alexander Maurits received his doctorate degree in 2011 and specializes in the European church history of the 19th and 20th Centuries. His PhD-thesis, Den vackra och erkända patriarchalismen (in English Splendid Establishment Patriarchalism. Lund High Church Ideals of Clerical Manliness) dissects the connection between secularization, defense of the established normative social and religious culture and Christian gender ideals during the second half of the 19th Century. For his thesis, Maurits was awarded the Nils Karleby Prize (50,000 SEK) in 2012.
His latest book, co-authored with Frida Mannerfelt, is The first ordained women in the Church of Sweden. Narratives of vocation and recognition (2026).
Maurits has been part of different research projects, for example Christian Manliness. A Paradox of Modernity, which was financed by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. He is a member of the Swedish Ecclesiastical History Society, and has been editor of the review section of its yearbook Kyrkohistorisk årsskrift.
Maurits teaches and supervises at all levels within Studies in Christianity. He has initiated the interdisciplinary courses Religion and Sports (first offered in spring 2014) and After #MeToo – Struggles for Recognition in Past and Present (first offered in 2019).
