Personal profile

Research

The goal of my research is to gain a better understanding of frontotemporal dementia and schizophrenia. Despite obvious differences between the conditions (the former is neurodegenerative, the latter neurodevelopmental), there are large similarities from a neuroanatomical standpoint. My strategy is to study two key anatomical regions (the thalamus and the insula), and through this get a better understanding of etiology, disease progress, diagnostics, etc., with the overarching goal to find better treatment options. Methodologically, I work with brain imaging (MRI), postmortem morphology, and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers.

Teaching

I teach medical students, biomedicine students, psychologists, and speech pathologist at the medical faculty on the subjects of dementia, frontotemporal dementia in particular, and schizophrenia
