Personal profile

Research

I am a senior Lecturer in Music Education with Educational Sciences as profile. As a music teacher, music teacher educator and researcher I have constantly been fascinated by the music teaching profession possibilities and limitations. In 2010 I defended my doctoral thesis “Music teachers discretionary power – possibilities and limitations”.  Discretionary power is defined as having possibilities and knowledge to make professional assessments and choices in the daily life. Both outer frames and inner conceptions influence the perceptions of the individual teacher.  Outer frames entail who music teachers relate to national plans, school organisation, the actual teaching situation together with students and cooperation with colleagues. But the individual can also develop an approach to the possibilities and limitations at hand, which can transcend the outer frames.  Discretionary power is developed in interplay between knowledge, will and action. My research interest has moved from music teachers general prerequisites towards micro moments in music teaching, pedagogical creativities and participatory formats. I teach educational sciences at the music teacher education program, and supervise students at graduate, master and PhD levels. In 2016 I received the Lund University Student Council Teaching Award. Since 2011 I am coordinating the courses within educational sciences and thesis on graduate and master level in the music teacher program. My international experience covers participation in international research projects as “Creativities  - Transcending Boundaries in Higher Music Education” and active involvement in European Association for Music in School (EAS) where I was the national coordinator (2009-2014) and board member (2015-2017). 2008-2010 and 2014-2016 I have been involved in a SIDA project respective a Linneaus Palme project which purpose was to build a Music Education Department at the Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi. I am initiator of a U21 project within “Innovation in Education” where teacher training programs at University of Hong Kong, University of Auckland, University of Johannesburg and Malmö Academy of Music at Lund University cooperates around a “Ideal school project” with a purpose to enhance international perspectives at each university.

Research

I am a Professor in Music Education with a profile in Educational Sciences, and Director of Studies for the doctoral programme in Music Education. My research explores the conditions, practices, and possiblities of music teaching, with a longstanding interest in teachers' professional agency and interplay between knowledge, will, and action in pedagogical work. Since defending my doctoral thesis Music teachers' discretionary power – possibilities and limitations (2010), my research has increasingly focused on micro-interactions in music teaching, pedagogical creativities, co-creating learning environments, and the use of Electronic Digital Instrument (EDIs) as a way to braoden participation and musical agency in educational settings.

My current research engagement  includes several interdisciplinary and international collaborations. I am part of the Teacher Education Academy for Music (TEAM), an EU co‑funded project advancing cross‑national development in music teacher education. I am also a researcher in the Pufendorf Institute Theme Next Generation Healthscapes, and I lead the affiliated Advanced Study Group The Art of Supervision: Interdisciplinary perspectives on doctoral supervision, which investigates supervision as a relational, reflective, and artistic practice. I am additionally affiliated with the Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities (BRCMH). My international experience includes participation in Creativities – Transcending Boundaries in Higher Music Education, long-term involvement in the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS), and leadership and development projects in Vietnam through SIDA and Linnaeus‑Palme. I am also both a former and current board member of the Nordic Network for Music Education Research (NNRME). In addition, I initiated a Universitas 21 project within Innovation in Education, linking teacher education programmes in Hong Kong, Auckland, Johannesburg, and Malmö to develop international perspectives through The Ideal School Project.

Within Lund University, I serve as Chair of the Local Coordination Group for ULF practice‑based school research and as a member of the ULF South regional node. I am Vice Chair of Lund University’s Research Studies Board, and Vice Chair of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts Research and Research Education Board. Until December 2026, I also serve as Deputy Head of Department for Research and Research Education at the Malmö Academy of Music.

I teach in both the teacher education programme and the doctoral education in Music Education, focusing on educational sciences, supervision, pedagogical creativity, and research‑based approaches to artistic and educational practice. My teaching philosophy is grounded in dialogic, participatory, and practice‑near methods that invite students and doctoral students to explore relations between practice, theory, artistry, and professional identity. I supervise students at bachelor, master, and PhD levels. In 2016 I received the Lund University Student Union Council Teaching Award.

Across my work—as teacher, researcher, leader, and collaborator—I am committed to fostering pedagogical creativity, relational professionalism, and learning environments characterised by dialogue, participation, community and artistic inquiry.
