Personal profile

Research

I received my PhD (2009) in Scandinavian languages at Centre of Languages and Literature at Lund university. My thesis dealt with the discursive practice of political pamphlets in the emerging public sphere in Sweden in 1769 and in 1809–1810. In my thesis I focus on discursive strategies of legitimation and delegitimation and discuss the analytical tools for performing such analyses.

My major field of interest is the use of language in society - contemporary as well as historically. I have a broad methodological interest for discourse analysis, text linguistics and sociolinguistics.

One area where I have conducted studies in spoken as well as written discourse is health and medicine. 2010–2013 I was part of a project at The Swedish Institute for Health Sciences studying intercultural communication in the care of children with diabetes. 2015–2018 I was part of the project Metaphors in Palliative Cancer Care (MEPAC). During 2021-2022 I was part of two Advanced Study Groups at the Pufendorf Institute: Reading and Health and Enhancing Empathy and Compassion. I am currently part of a research team working with Shared reading and health.

Other fields of interests are vocabulary knowledge, reading and, not least, political discourses. Since a few years back I work in a European project focusing on supporters of populist parties, and 2023 we published the book Voices of supporters – Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections. We are now continuing our work focusing on the use of affect in interactions between populist parties and their supporters on social media.
