I work within the field of diabetes. My research is focused on insulin release from pancreatic beta cells and glucagon release from pancreatic alpha cells. Insulin and glucagon work together to keep the blood glucose levels within an optimal range. In diabetes the ability to control the glucose levels is disturbed and neither insulin nor glucagon is released at the right levels at the right time. For any of the hormones to be released a plethora of different proteins needs to collaborate in a highly orderly fashion. I have focused my research on ion channels and certain exocytotic proteins involved in the process. My aim is to understand not only the role of my favorite proteins but also how they are regulated. Therefore some of my projects concerns the role of microRNA regulation of hormone release.
