Personal profile

Research

I am a PhD student at the Department of Service Studies. With a focus on sustainability and consumption, my research is about the social and cultural processes involved in natural resources becoming food products and services.

In my thesis project I focus on seaweed as an empirical case and people’s understanding of this renewable resource. I'm interested in how different consumer groups understand seaweed and what people know about eating it. Even though it is a common ingredient in many cuisines, it is currently a niche product in Sweden. Sweden has over 3000km of coastline, but harvesting wild species or cultivating seaweed for human food consumption, is not very common. I research people's stories and values connected to natural resources, and how seaweed is visible and experienced in an everyday live context.

Currently, our understanding of addressing sustainability challenges and utilizing novel food resources is dominated by the natural sciences, but important questions remain. In the case of seaweed, we ask: Will seaweed actually be eaten in Sweden and how can it be integrated into people’s everyday consumption?

Furthermore, I am part of the interdisciplinary project “Marine food resources for new markets”: https://www.ism.lu.se/en/marine-food-resources-for-new-markets

My study background is an international Master´s degree in Leadership for Sustainability from Malmö University and a Bachelor´s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology from Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in Munich, Germany.
