Quantum computers might hold great potential for the near future, and there are several different ways or making a quantum computer. In the quantum information group we are trying to build one using rare-earth-ions that are placed ("trapped") in a crystal. The aim is to use individual ions as qubits, which means that we have multitudes of potential qubits at our diposal in a small crystal. This is what my research will be about.
The first challenge here is to detect individual ions. Which will be done using a microcavity. Which is an optical cavity with micrometer dimensions. Then we want to be able to control several ions/qubits simultaneously. These qubits will be controlled with lasers and hence part of my project is to create a control system that can switch between these qubits.
