Research

My research areas concern mainly environmental peacebuilding, protection of the environment in relation to armed conflict, the role of environmental defenders in fragile conflict areas and issues related to just transition and sustainable development. Currently, I’m leading two larger research projects. One project funded by Formas, which seeks to map the international legal framework in regard to peacebuilding activities aiming at restoring and protecting the environment. The project studies the practice of stakeholders acting on the behalf of the international community to protect the environment by taking over state functions in developing states in the aftermath of armed conflict (post-conflict). The other project funded by Marianne och Marcus Wallenbergs Stiftelse. It investigates the role of EU for a and just green transition and how instruments adopted by the EU comply with international law. This project also analyses the tensions that may arise in relation to the transition in relation to what interests that should be prioritized and in what context. I’m also the coordinator of an Erasmus + project aiming to strengthen universities’ capacities to promote citizen science to redress and recover war-related environmental damages in Ukraine (https://gromada-erasmus.eu). In addition, I’m involved in three multi-disciplinary research projects: Formas research project on environmental defenders in Colombia, a LU Agenda 2030-funded LU4Water project on sustainable water use and water policy with main focus on Sweden, Past as present funded by the Research Council re-examining the present-day fragmented and ‘failed state’ of Congo (DRC) in light of the rule of law activities pursued in the lower Congo by Swedish missionaries from the Mission Covenant Church of Swede in collaboration with Gothenburg university.
