My work aims to increase knowledge of fly ash and boiler ash from hazardous waste incineration at high temperatures. Sampling of fly ash is made directly from the flue gas channel at full scale operation plant ‘in-flight’ before aggregation takes place. As a part of my work I have also developed a tool for collection of boiler ash deposits.
Investigating the chemistry and physical properties of the ash will facilitate future designs of ash recovery and recycling. Techniques for analyzing the ash include XAS, ICP-MS, IC, SEM-EDS and others. In a circular economy, closing the loop for elements of interest is highly important since it not only reduces the need for virgin materials but also minimizes waste deposited in landfills.
