I am an interdisciplinary scholar with a Master of History from Lund University (1998) and a Ph. D. in Technology and social change from the department of Tema at Linköping University (2006).
Since 2002 I lecture at the Department of Service Management, where I hold a position as assistant professor (lektor) of history of sciene and ethics. Between 2006 and 2008 I also acted as student advisor/study planner at the department. When I gave up that position I started working part time at the CED, the Centre for Educational Development, where university teachers develop their teaching skills.
Research interests
I am interested in legitimacy. How it is produced, who stands to gain from it and what its by-products are. My research focuses the co-production of political legitimacy and scientific credibility. Lately this interest is turning towards the leadership which makes it all possible.
I am a historian, because my research is based on historical methods and has been concerned with the 20th century. As such, I like to address problems of current political and social interest. I have a keen interest in ethics in practice, medical experimentation on human beings, the history of the Swedish welfare state, the formatting of its policies and the emergence of new research disciplines. I am also interested in power relations, management and leadership.
In my ongoing project I study the challenges to interdisciplinary work with special focus on academic leadership. Read an article on p.33 (in Swedish) inLUM about some challenges.
In my latest project I studied how biomedical researchers define and work towards academic success. Read more about the Bagadilico- project and my partners at the Biomedicine Centre (BMC) at Lund University
I have also studied academic leadership, focusing om how teachers may take responsability for leading their students, working togehter with Malin Irhammar. Download our book Osynligt och självklart?.
My Ph. D. thesis focused the legitimacy within the domain of public health-oriented research in Sweden in the 1940's and 50's: that of odontology and public dental health care. Read more in Sockerförsöket. Kariesexperimenten 1943–1960 på Vipeholms sjukhus för sinnesslöa (Lund 2006). Read a review in English orSwedish about the book or download its initial chapters.
I have also done research on technology, cultural change and popular fears, studying Tintin and the cold war as an example. Read about it in Tvärsnitt 2000:4 or in the forthcoming book Världens gång - Teknikens gång (eds. Gyberg and Hallström, Lund 2009).
Making research accessible to the public
I like to talk and write about the academic world and the research it generates - not only my own - outside of university. I often lecture on ethics and leadership to other organisations. Between 2002 and 2005 I also wrote a personal chronicle on the editorial page of Östgötacorrespondenten. Read some examples here on the Tsunami catastrophy, the art of reading a thesesand when grown men cry.
I started lecturing at a university level in 1999 by giving courses on Scandinavian history in English at the Department of History at Lund University.
In Linköping I developped and ran courses for engineering students on the social role of the engineer, and on the history of science and technology.
In 2002 and 2003 I lectured on science and technology studies at the Department of History of Science and Ideas at Lund University.
In 2002 I also set up the course Diversity Management at the Department of Service Management at Campus Helsingborg, Lund University, where I have been developping and lecturing on courses on service management, health-maintaining leadership, ethics, diversity, conflict management, consumption and identity-making, customer relationship management, academic conduct and academic writing ever since.
I often lecture at other departments on academic writing and academic conduct. Read some comments on my work with academic conduct in Helsingborg and Malmö, or listen to an interview about it.
I am very proud to have recieved Lund University's pedagogic prize for my work in developping our service management programs. Read about the prize inSydsvenskan. Read the list and see important role models from Campus Helsingborg, like Carl Hellberg (1986 and 1992), Lars Haikola (1994) Torgny Roxå (2003), Arne Kristiansen (2004), who have rcieved the price!
Toolbox for academic studies
My teaching departs from the idea that academic skill is something that all students can learn to master, as long as it is turned in to explicit knowledge and not kept as tacit knowledge. This conviction is linked to my reserach interests in legitimacy and the question of who stands to gain from the privilege that certain forms of knowledge are kept tacit.
I have developped a set of workshops called Toolbox for academic studies to this end, which all students at the programmes of Service Management and ofStrategic communication at Campus Helsingborg follow.
