Personal profile

I conduct research related to methodology for large-scale industrial software development. Large-scale software development involves huge amounts of abstract information handled by many people. The products or systems themselves are nothing but information, nothing we can touch on, or see. At the same time, they tend to grow in size and complexity. Because people by nature have a very limited ability to process information, it poses great challenges to developing and quality-assure software in a systematic and controlled manner.

In order to understand the conditions for large-scale software development, we need to study both tools and processes and social and cognitive aspects of these. That's why I do most of my research through empirical studies in close collaboration with industry. I have a special interest in how knowledge is developed and communicated within the discipline and have written articles on methodology and theory building for software engineering as a design science.
