Research

My research concerns methodology for large-scale industrial software development, with a particular focus on developing empirical methods and tools for continuous quality assurance (QA), such as e.g. monitoring and testing. With increased complexity and power in the software systems, through e.g. increasing autonomy and adaptability, it has become even more important to establish rigorous methods that can control and regulate the creative process.

Although intelligent automation tools can also be applied to software development and testing, human interaction is still essential for decision-making and accountability. In order to understand the conditions for large-scale software development, we need to study tools and processes as well as social and cognitive aspects of these. Therefore, I conduct most of my research through empirical studies in close collaboration with industry. I have a particular interest in how knowledge is developed and communicated within the discipline and have written about methodology and theory building for software development as a design science.
