Breast cancer is affecting every tenth woman. Local recurrences (LR) indicate an increased risk of distant recurrences (DR) and mortality and might be the first sign towards a spread disease. Prediction of LR could therefore be crucial, an issue we attempt to address. The overall aim within the group is to predict recurrences by monitoring breast cancer specific proteins in tumors and patient blood, primarily using a combination of the DNA sequence and mass spectrometric analysis and to translate these findings into clinical routine work. The proteogenomic strategy will enable us to identify biomarker profiles that predict LR which will be validated by immunohistochemistry (TMA) in additional tumor material and by mass spectrometry of blood samples. We hope that these approaches will uncover breast cancer specific changes that will define new biomarkers distinguishing patients with an increased risk of developing LR.
