    Malnutrition in form of a too low consumption of dietary fibres (prebiotics) is the cause of many health problems in the Western world. My research is aiming at tackling this problem by converting lignocellulose rich agricultural side streams, such as oat hulls and potato pulp, to (prebiotic) health promoting food ingredients in the form of a biorefinery process. The fibres in these waste streams will also be fine-tuned to desired properties for incorporation into special food products. The major treatment steps will include a chemical or physicochemical pre-treatment stage, a chemical and/or enzymatic bleaching stage and an enzymatic treatment stage. The research will contribute to the general knowledge on how to make efficient use of biomass, thus facilitating the transition to a biobased economy.
